Mark Caicedo

A free-lance photographer based in Ferndale, Washington, my images celebrate live performance, cultural diversity, the natural world and the people around us. I began taking photos as a Peace Corps Volunteer in the 1980s with a trusty (and basic) Pentax K-1000 capturing images of the people and environment of rural Honduras. Eventually graduating to more sophisticated equipment, I received advanced training in darkroom printing techniques and became well-versed in the world of print and online publishing. The last few years I’ve had the opportunity to combine my love of music and photography. I’ve captured live music performances ranging from national touring acts such as Neil Young, Eric Johnson and Emmylou Harris to regional performers like Pretty Gritty, Near Northeast and the Karen Jonas Band. Live music photography is portraiture; about capturing that moment when artist and instrument are united as one. I'm not interested in the light show or the lasers or the rock star poses. Rather, as a photographer I'm striving to capture that split second when, as critic David Ackert says, “[they give their] lives to a moment – to that melody, that lyric, that chord.”
